SURROUNDED by brightly coloured fiberglass statues of a deity, a world renowned artist was ready to open Wyndham resident’s minds.

David Sequeira is the artist behind Monochromes, a new exhibition that will be held at the Wyndham Cultural Centre until Sunday 3 March as part of the council’s Midsumma Festival.

The gallery is filled with statues of Buddha painted in solid colours and mirrors with the words everything and nothing on them.

“The idea is that to have everything you need nothing, and to have nothing you need everything. You can’t have one without the other,” Mr Sequeira said.

“It’s certainly not an original thought. It’s in every major system of faith.”

Mr Sequeira said he chose Buddha to help him represent his idea of everything and nothing because of what the god represents.

“The Buddha statues are a kind of icon associated with relaxing and getting to a space of nothing,” he said.

“I’m interested in not having them austere or serious and bringing out that sense of playfulness.”

Mr Sequeira said my incorporating the mirrors visitors to the gallery could become more engaged with the art.

“When you look in the mirror you become part of the art,” he said.

“It comes back to Buddha again because when people engage with him they’re inseparable.”

Based in Canberra, Mr Sequeira regularly travels to India to gain inspiration for his work.
