WYNDHAM Council has announced that it supports the recommendations of a parliamentary inquiry into liveability in outer suburban Melbourne.
The inquiry found significant investment was required by State and Federal Governments to deliver crucial infrastructure and services to communities on Melbourne’s booming urban fringe.
Tabled in State Parliament last month, the findings of the inquiry recommended the State Government direct developers to facilitate the staged release of land on the urban fringe.
Wyndham Mayor, Heather Marcus, said with the municipality’s population rapidly approaching 200,000, more had to be done by both State and Federal Governments to address the growing pains being experienced by residents.
“Welcoming more than 12,000 residents to our city every year means more than just supplying housing. We need more roads, public transport services, police and health and family services just to keep up,” Cr Marcus said.
“The State Government is planning to release another 30 years land supply in Wyndham over the next two years, and without any controls on the staging of development, this will result in chaos. The orderly roll-out of a limited number of growth fronts is a must if we’re to adequately provide for our community.”
Cr Marcus said the council would continue to advocate for vital infrastructure.
