WITH children in Wyndham returning to school in the coming weeks, Wyndham Council has given parents a lecture of their own.

School speed zones will be back in place from Tuesday 29 January and speed limits will reduce to 40 kilometres an hour between 8 and 9.30am and between 2.30 and 4pm.

Councillor Peter Gibbons, who is a representative on the Roadsafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council, said children can behave unpredictably around roads and because they are small, can be harder to see.

“We have about 34,446 school aged children in Wyndham this year with 58 per cent of these children attending primary school and 42 per cent attending secondary school,” Cr Gibbons said.

“With such a large proportion of our community going to school, it’s our responsibility as drivers to help keep them safe by obeying the school speed zones.”

Cr Gibbons said parents and other drivers also needed to respect other road signs.

“Drivers also need to pay attention to parking restriction signs including bus stops, disabled parking, and ‘No Standing’ signs,” he said.

“It is an offence to double park and make sure you keep clear of the children’s crossings by leaving 20 metres clear on the approach side and 10 metres clear on the departure side to ensure good visibility for users of the crossing.”
