WESTERN Suburbs athletics trainer John Henry is readying his troops ahead of next month’s Keilor Gift.

Henry is leading an impressive stable of athletes including brothers, Matt, Chris and Shaun Hargreaves as well as Rhys Parkinson and former female athlete of the year Laura-Jane Hilditch.

After solid results at last weekend’s gift double header at St Albans and Ringwood, Henry is happy with the preparation of his athletes.

“These guys have been running for quite a few years and they have competed in big gifts all over Australia,” he said.

“They’re very level-headed pros. They go about their business properly. They don’t get carried away with anything. They know what their job is and they do it.”

With impressive fields already starting to take shape in both the men’s and women’s events, Henry said there are two key factors which impact on an athlete’s ability to win a handicap race.

“There are certain things that must happen if you’re going to win a gift. The guys know this by now,” he said.

“They must be running well and their mark must be right. If either one of those aren’t in place then it makes it very difficult.”

While athletes across Victoria and Australia continue their Keilor Gift preparations, organisers are putting the finishing touches on plans for the big day.

As well as the athletic events, wood-chopping, kids’ activities, food and drink tents and a bookmaker will be just some of the extra entertainment.

Former Keilor Gift committee member Matthew Webster said organisers worked hard to ensure the success of the event.

“People know what to expect when they come to Keilor. It is very highly regarded,” Webster said.

“They know that the racing is going to be hard fought and sometimes you may see a Stawell Gift finalist if not a Stawell Gift winner in the race somewhere. They use it as a bit of a lead-up to the big one at Easter time.

“Organisers really pride ourselves on our capabilities and expertise on the day.”

Weather permitting, the Keilor Gift will end with a fireworks display after the last race.
