WORK has already started on construction of the largest Bunnings Warehouse store in Victoria to be built in Hoppers Crossing.

As revealed by Star last year, the massive store will be located on Old Geelong Rd in Hoppers Crossing and will cover more than 20,000 square metres.

Bunnings Chief Operating Officer, Peter Davis, said the construction of the store was a multi-million dollar operation.

“Construction has recently commenced on the new Bunnings Warehouse Hoppers Crossing development, with H Troon appointed as the builder. Bunnings expects the store to be completed and open for customers in late 2013,” Mr Davis said.

“Bunnings Warehouse Hoppers Crossing will comprise of the main store, indoor timber trade sales area, building materials and landscape supply yard and an outdoor nursery. The development will also include an indoor playground, cafe, and provide parking for over 460 cars.

“Bunnings will invest more than $44 million in the development of the more than two hectare Hoppers Crossing site.”

Mr Davis said hundreds of jobs would also be created by the venture.

“More than 130 jobs will be created in the local community following the opening, joining the 190 existing team members from the current store,” he said.

“Strong employment and on-the-job training opportunities will be made available for local residents. Additionally, over 230 jobs will be created through the construction process.”

Mr Davis said the current Bunnings store already located on Old Geelong Rd would close once the new store is opened and all staff will be transferred to the new store.

He said Bunnings was still evaluating options for the old site.
