Mercy Sisters hit the road

By Xavier Smerdon
WERRIBEE played host to two dedicated nuns last week as they travelled around Australia in the name of charity.
Sister Julianne Murphy from the Travelling Sisters will drive her red and orange van from Victoria, through South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales and end up in Queensland by October.
Along the way she will be joined by a local nun in every area she visits.
“We’ll be visiting local schools and promoting the Mary MacKillop Foundation,” Sister Murphy said.
Sister Murphy said the foundation is doubling the number of projects they will be funding this year to try and support people in disaster effected areas of Australia.
But it is not just a fundraising mission, the Sisters will also be spreading a message of hope.
“People need to be aware that there is hope,” Sister Murphy said.
“These children have seen such distressing things on TV and they need to know that people are out there doing good deeds.”
Sister Murphy said that Saint Mary MacKillop was one of her greatest inspirations as she embarked on her seven-month-long journey.
“She was someone who met the needs of the people around her and liked to roll up her sleeves and help,” she said.
“It’s a great tribute to a great lady.”
The students from Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College were some of the first to be visited by the Travelling Sisters.
“The kids have been very excited to see our van because its a big red and orange one,” Sister Murphy said.
“We tell them that Mary MacKillop’s story continues today through them.”
