National banks on

THE National Australia Bank has agreed to extend its sponsorship and upgrade its role in the 2007 Victorian PGA Championship to be played at Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club from 25 to 28.
NAB’s general manager of business banking for Victoria and Tasmania Geoff Greer said last week: “Extending our involvement for another year demonstrates our commitment to the event and the people of Melbourne’s western suburbs,” he said.
The acting executive officer for the Australian PGA Victorian and Tasmanian Division, Megan Pauwels, welcomed the bank’s continuing involvement in Victorian professional golf.
“NAB is an iconic Australian brand,” she said.
“The Victorian PGA is delighted to have a commercial relationship with such a renowned institution as NAB as the naming rights sponsor for this event.”
The NAB $100,000 Victorian PGA Championship should draw many of the country’s top professional golfers to Sanctuary Lakes once again.

HOBSONS Bay Council will conduct a meet and greet day at the Paisley Park complex next weekend to push their ideas for revamping the complex.
The councillors will probably seek out the operators of the Altona Lakes Golf Course to see what their needs are but one wonders if they will continue to ignore the members of the Altona Lakes Golf Club (there are over 100 of them and they vote too) who will seek to give the councillors an insight into the shocking conditions in a makeshift clubhouse that can only be described as a “dog box”.
The members are in a position to help raise revenue for a new clubhouse adjacent to the course but they need the councillors (and that means you, Cr Hemphill) to listen to their ideas.

THE much sought after Tiger Woods Trophy went to youngster Earl Abas at Altona Lakes Golf Club’s annual presentation day last Saturday.
The award is made each year to the player with the best percentages during the medal rounds.
Trophies were also presented to Mick Kelly and Kat Epae, the men’s and women’s club champions, as well as to VGL and club medal winners throughout the previous year.

LAST Saturday must have been “comedy day” at a couple of local courses. The first giggle was at Medway where the club’s jovial president Bob Blackmore is hurriedly seeking putting lessons after five putting the 17th green, which I might add cost him dearly!
My sources told me that the steam emanating from ‘Blackie’s’ ears when he walked off the green would have driven Puffing Billy.
The second disaster happened at Werribee Park where former Captain Wayne Whiting’s GB Products Grasshopper battery driven golf buggy decided to take off over the cliff on the 18th.
The sturdiness of the make came to the fore and it was still going after it rolled all the way to the bottom.
One of those who laughed loudest at ‘Fish’s’ misfortune was Craig Parry’s father Tom, who was a guest of the club and who was on the 16th tee to witness the action.
