GREG Norman’s mentor Charlie Earp had a great time last week when he was the house guest of Sanctuary Lakes Captain Alan Smith before taking part in the official opening of the Brett Le Broque Golf Academy.
At a special dinner, Earp told those present that the Greg Norman-designed golf course at Sanctuary Lakes was 100 per cent better than he had thought it would be. He predicted that as it ages it will get even better and be capable of holding any of this country’s major golf tournaments.
He also said that the purpose of the Greg Norman Foundation (of which he is chairman) is to help get youngsters off the streets and playing the game. He has a strong belief that the game can be better promoted to the masses by the use of celebrities who play golf for relaxation. If the youngsters were given this message, more of them might turn to golf as a sport and for the exercise.

WITH the AFL finals just around the corner, the Sanctuary Lakes Foundation will conduct a Sportsman’s Lunch at the club on Friday 1 September in conjunction with Sports 927.
Michael Roberts will compere the event and there will be a select panel of sports people, media personalties and AFL identities who will discuss issues and the AFL finals competition.
The cost is $60 per person, which includes a three-course lunch with beer, wine and soft drinks. The club is also offering a “Book a table of eight and only pay for seven” bonus. To reserve a table or to make a booking contact the Sanctuary Lakes Club on 9395 2888.

THERE are a couple of new nominations for the Star Golfer of the Month Award. David Allan recently had a hole in one on the 173 metre par three 3rd hole at the RAAF Williams Base Laverton course.
Eleven-year-old Elcho Park Lara junior and Hoppers Crossing resident Alan Bunting Jnr went one up on his father Alan Snr recently when he holed out on the second hole at SISTEMS Golf.
Dad who plays off six and who has never had an “ace” will now have to get one himself to put an end to junior’s taunts.
