SEDDON’S streets will receive new trees as the winter rains clear the way for the Urban Design Framework project to continue.
Sheoak Ward Councillor Janis Rossiter said with the cooler weather and the hopeful promise of regular rain the council is continuing the work started with the projects in Charles St and Seddon Station.
“Greening the major promenades in Seddon is an important part of our plan for Seddon’s future and something our residents have been waiting for,” she said.
At a cost of $30,000, the Gamon St phase of the project involves planting 10 smooth-barked trees along the median strip. The works also aim to keep the streets safer for children and senior residents.
“Seddon is a primarily residential area, with quiet streets, yet a lot of community activity,” Cr Rossiter said.
“The addition of these trees will not only green the area, but will assist in reducing traffic speed.”
While the drought and resulting water restrictions led the council to suspend many of its planting programs during summer, the change in conditions has paved the way for planting to continue.
“There just hasn’t been the necessary water available to ensure the plants were going to be able to develop properly,” Cr Rossiter said.
“The rain we’re now receiving is just what is needed for the trees in the area and for the community as a whole.”
