Funds to help improve road safety

THE Tarneit-based Adult Multicultural Education Services, Heathdale Neighbourhood Renewal and the Footscray Football Club will receive more than $56,000 to help keep local roads safer.
Tarneit MP and Minister for Roads and Ports Tim Pallas said the funding was part of the Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) effort to give community groups and councils funding to tackle road trauma.
Mr Pallas congratulated Adult Multicultural Education Services and Heathdale Neighbourhood Renewal for being one of the first projects to be funded under the TAC’s new $4 million community road safety program.
The $19,865 grant to Adult Multicultural Education Services will support a volunteer-supported driver education for new migrants in the Karen and Sudanese communities.
The $16,550 grant to Heathdale Neighbourhood Renewal will engage young people and use a speed feedback trailer to reduce speed on streets.
The $20,000 grant to Footscray Football Club will enhance a volunteer-supported bicycle education program for the Karen community.
“Local communities are often best placed to find new opportunities to reduce road accidents in the local area,” Mr Pallas said.
“This $56,415 will give our local community the chance to take action to make our roads safer for all road users.”
Mr Pallas said the projects targeted a wide range of issues including speed, pedestrians, motorcyclists, cyclists, drink driving and driver education.
