THE Werribee Bees are buzzing on the eve of Men’s Premier League Bowls season as they launch an assault on a finals appearance this year.
Led by new skipper Dane McKinnon and team coach Brett Dodd, the club has made all the right moves in the off-season for success.
“For us this year it will be about getting away to a good start in those first few games. We are really aiming to be able to beat the best teams this year,” committee member Rob Casey said.
“We have a brand new green that is only in its second year. It runs a bit quicker than what the opposition teams are expecting and gives us a good home-ground advantage.”
McKinnon is one of the youngest ever captains in Premier Bowls at just 17 years old. He joins his team-mates after the ideal preparation with a Victorian State Squad training camp.
Casey said it was great for the club to host some of the best young talent in Victoria.
“Dane is a great kid and we know he will lead us well this season. It’s great to have some of these young guys around. They really play without any fear. We love having them around the club,” he said. “I would encourage any youngsters to come along and give bowls a go. It’s such a great game.”
“We don’t charge them anything for memberships until they are 18 and we would really like to see them start at the age of nine or 10 and go through to senior competition.”
The club has enjoyed solid numbers attend training sessions to date ahead of final team selection.
“At the moment we would have around 24 people training with the squad and in a couple of weeks we will make the announcement of the teams,” Casey said.
