BRIMBANK Police have fined more than 30 people for public drinking and anti-social behaviour over the summer months.
A total of 31 anti-social behaviour penalty notices were handed out over the past three months in Brimbank, with offences ranging from drunk and disorderly conduct, to failing to move on.
Twenty-three people were fined for being drunk, seven for drunk and disorderly conduct, while one person was fined for failing to ignore police instructions to move on.
The fines were among more than 3000 penalty notices handed out across Victoria after new police powers were introduced in December last year.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Andrew Crisp said the on-the-spot fines were an important tool to help tackle alcohol-related crimes including assaults, anti-social behaviour and property damage.
“In the past, if a person was found to be drunk and causing trouble they might be detained by police for a few hours and then sent home with a bit of a hangover,” Mr Crisp said.
“Now there are significant consequences and drunks and troublemakers will be hit with a $234 on-the-spot fine.”
