Safety overhaul

THE Laverton North industrial precinct is set for an overhaul to reduce road fatalities in the area.
The State Government announced a $540,000 boost last week to upgrade the neglected sector.
Works will include a skid resistance overlay, new lanterns, lamps, a widening of the swept path, line markings and a change to the inter-green time. Altona MP Jill Hennessy said many motorists used the Western Ring Road in the Laverton North area every day.
Run-off-road crashes have accounted for 40 per cent of fatalities and 28 per cent of serious injuries on Victorian roads over the past five years.
Ms Hennessy said while the state recorded historic low road tolls over the last seven years, further work needed to be done to reduce road trauma.
The Wyndham Industrial Liaison and Development Committee had mounted a campaign for critical funds from the government to improve Dohertys Rd. Wyndham City Council will also spend $2 million to pave footpaths, create kerbs and channels and plant trees.
