MARIBYRNONG City Council spends $100,000 on graffiti removal each year and is calling on volunteers to take part in their “graffiti free day” on 21 October.
Mayor Janet Rice said this was the second year that the council had called on the community to help remove graffiti from walls and fences in the municipality.
“Last year Paint Spot sponsored the clean-up day organised by a group of community volunteers. This year Maribyrnong Council will match Paint Spot’s generous contribution dollar-for-dollar while a third sponsor, Barlo World, is also donating paint,” Cr Rice said.
Volunteers will be painting and applying anti-graffiti coating to surfaces at Hansen Reserve and Shorten Reserve in West Footscray and Irving St in Footscray.
Councillor Catherine Cumming will be the site supervisor for the Shorten Reserve site.
“We hope to get lots of volunteers along to help us paint a paling fence that runs along the edge of the park and is looking fairly messy at the moment,” Cr Cumming said.
“All volunteers will be given safety and clean-up equipment on the day but we ask that they wear protective shoes and suitable clothing,” she said.
A free sausage sizzle will be held at both the Hansen Reserve site and the Shorten Reserve site to thank volunteers for participating in the clean-up at the end of the day.
Residents in the municipality can remove graffiti from their own properties with a free graffiti removal kit on request from the council, for a free kit contact Maribyrnong Council on 9688 0200.

Location 1: Hansen Reserve, Roberts Street car park – next to Kingsville Kindergarten, 2pm site supervisor: Peter Milford (0418 775 722).

Location 3: Irving Street – just outside platform 1 – Footscray Railway Station, 1pm, site supervisor: Grace Girardi (0417 395 602).
