YARRAVILLE’S Joanne Schloss is one of 12 artists selected to show her work at the inaugural Off The Wall exhibition in Melbourne this month.
The exhibition is part of Art Melbourne O6, an annual four day event.
Ms Schloss’s work is destined to be seen by thousands of people as the last Art Melbourne O6 fair, previously known as the Melbourne Affordable Art Show, attracted about 16,000 visitors.
She competed against 180 entrants from across Australia for a spot in the exhibition, which was designed to give independent artists exposure during the prestigious Art Melbourne O6 fair.
Ms Schloss will exhibit a series of paintings that have sentimental meaning to her.
“My recent series of paintings centres around abandoned and decaying buildings in Melbourne with particular interest in Footscray’s Barkly Theatre,” she said.
“It has an old world charm, I’ve a bit of sadness that it can’t be restored to it’s former beauty but it is now going to be turned into apartments.
“It taps into something elemental within me.”
Ms Schloss said the series also includes dream imagery and figures from her childhood, with “loneliness” and “stillness” represented in the paintings.
“I am mainly concerned with how people view the world in times of loneliness, which can be melancholy but also filled with self discovery and courage.”
The fair includes a range of art work including paintings, sculpture, printworks and more.
Exhibition visitors are urged to buy with more than 75 per cent of the art work priced under $5000.
The exhibition runs from 20-23 April at the Royal Exhibition Building, for tickets call Ticketmaster 136 100.
