WYNDHAM mayor Cr Kim McAliney praised the work of some of the community’s unsung heroes at a major awards ceremony last Friday.
The annual Wyndham Community Awards recognised those residents who have made a significant contribution to the community over the past 12 months.
In February, former mayor Peter Hudson was named Wyndham’s Citizen of the Year in honour of his many years of hard work on business, charity, cultural and sporting projects.
The Disability Access Award was won by Janelle Reeves; the Wyndham Safety Award was presented to the Heathdale Neighborhood Association for its work in crime prevention; the Russell Mark Sports Award was presented to rally driver Cody Crocker; and the Young Achiever Award was taken out by 19-year-old Mohammed Isah.
Judith Sutcliffe was named Volunteer of the Year and the Environmental Award was won by Paul Harder, recognising his work in initiating the Local Flora and Sustainability Garden at the Wyndham Art Works in Sayers Road.
Cr McAliney said the 2008 award winners had all done their bit to improve Wyndham.
“The Wyndham Community Awards allow residents to pay tribute to those who make a major contribution towards the betterment of Wyndham,” she said.
“These awards show there are a number of different ways to promote and improve Wyndham, whether through sound environmental practices, improving access for those with disabilities or volunteering – everyone can make a difference.
“The awards honour the people in Wyndham who make our community a better place to live by donating their time and expertise and I congratulate them on their achievement.”
