A TEAHOUSE is proposed for the banks of the Maribyrnong River near Moreland St, Footscray.
Developer Castlewell is proposing the teahouse and new office for Maribyrnong River Cruises, which is already situated on the river bank.
Maribyrnong City Council has not received detailed plans for the buildings but are facilitating the project between Castlewell, Maribyrnong River Cruises, Parks Victoria and Department of Sustainability and Environment.
Developer Tony Donchi said plans for the site had been on the cards for about 10 years.
He said the teahouse and office was part of the $100 million Saltriver Place apartment development strategy that is located in Footscray near the river.
Maribyrong mayor Michael Clarke said it was important to note that the council had not approved any plans.
“It’s progressing the process. No firm plans have come to council for approval as yet,” he said.
“From council’s perspective our need is to see a development that is in keeping with intent of the developments along that river.
“We are very much looking at recreation and as much opportunity for public use and public utilisation of the area.
“The teahouse as a concept is just terrific because we think it would be terrific to sit on that river, have some tea, have a scone and then after that walk across to the Blackbird and do a tour up the river,” Cr Clarke said, referring to Maribyrnong River Cruises.
