YARRAVILLE Club Cricket Club has continued its glowing support of the Don Deeble Award by pledging $3500 for next year’s winner.
The award, which runs from July to June each year, recognises the outstanding efforts of sporting locals who have excelled in their fields at state, national or international level.
Yarraville Club became the major sponsor of the award in 2005-06, offering $2000 to the winner and $500 for second and third-place getters.
Along with the increased first prize this year, those sportspeople in second and third place will also benefit from a $700 cheque.
Altona soccer player Amy Jackson, who represents Australia’s Young Matildas, was a popular winner of the 2005-06 award.
Previous winners include Werribee swimmer Kobie Scott and lacrosse star Ryan Garnsworthy.
Basketballer Cameron McCallum from Melton was the first nominee in the new season and was recognised at a meeting of the Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club last week.
