Gas leak shuts down parts of Sunshine North

Sulphur dioxide escaped from international gas company Air Liquide’s Bunnett St offices about 6.30am on Friday, 9 February. Police, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Ambulance Service were all called out to the scene, where police blocked off Berkshire Rd while paramedics treated people for conditions arising from contact with the gas.
Paramedics treated 15 people who had been overcome by the fumes, with symptoms including shortness of breath, and burning sensations in eyes, nose and throat.
Western Health spokesman Michael Sinclair said a number of people were taken to Sunshine Hospital, but were discharged an hour later.
By 9.10am police had re-opened Berkshire Rd.
