DAY trips for pensioners and drama and music projects and have gained funding in the past, but this year Maribyrnong City Council is hoping to attract applications from new community groups following the opening of the annual grants program.
Community groups and not-for-profit organisations have been invited to apply for part of the $65,000 set aside for the Community and Cultural Grants 2007-08 program.
Projects promoting volunteerism, the environment and cultural activity are the new themes the council has incorporated into this year’s grants program.
The grants program was established in 1995 to improve the quality of life and cultural aspirations of communities across the municipality.
Maribyrnong City Council mayor Michael Clarke said the grants supported and celebrated the municipality’s diversity.
“They encourage our city’s residents to develop their skills and build healthy and effective community relationships,” he said.
Projects to prevent violence in the home before it occurs will be eligible for funding for the first time under a new category, Preventing Violence against Women.
The new category focuses on strengthening communities and organisations to promote equality in family relationships.
Up to $500 in funding is available for social support projects and up to $1500 is available for programs that incorporate healthy active communities, preventing violence against women, volunteerism, environment and arts and cultural activities.
Applications must meet at least one of the criteria set up to guide groups and individuals applying for grants.
Applications must be received by Friday 21 September.
Application forms are available from the council’s website, the council office, libraries and community centres.
