Man dies in railway crossing accident

A 42-year-old man from Carrum Downs was killed at a level crossing at Tottenham railway station last Thursday about 4.15pm, when his car was hit by a train.
The man was dropping off a friend who worked at the Pacific National railway yards, which resulted in him using the crossing that runs off Sunshine Rd, Tottenham.
Footscray Police Sergeant Robert Thompson said the man had dropped off his friend and was re-crossing the train tracks when the accident took place.
The man’s green Ford was hit on the passenger side and the train dragged the car about 130 metres down the train track.
The 3.48 Sydenham-Watergardens bound train was carrying 300 passengers.
Ambulances were called to assist passengers who were able to continue their journey by Connex supplied buses.
Train services on the Sydenham line were held up for more than three hours.
Four fire units attended the scene and the jaws of life were used to cut the dead man’s body out of his car.
The police and Connex are investigating the accident.
