A SELECTION of Melton Shire’s waterways will be environmentally rejuvenated with a $60,000 cash boost from Melbourne Water.
The company decided to fund improvements to Toolern Creek in Melton South, Benson’s Rd Reserve in Toolern Vale, and Arnolds Creek north of the Calder Freeway, following a proposal from the Melton Shire Council’s environmental services unit.
Council will also contribute cash to the tune of $45,000 to the work which is due to start in August.
Melton Shire mayor Chris Papas said council will restore and improve degraded banks by planting native trees and shrubs, which will protect the waterways from erosion, improve the water quality and provide living areas for wildlife.
About 2,300 trees and shrubs will be planted, along with 23,000 native grass cylinders and five bales of kangaroo grass.
The money will also pay for planting materials, erosion control matting, weed mats, stakes and tree guards.
