Simply stupid

CAROLINE Springs’ top cop has issued a blunt warning to hoon drivers after police nabbed a motorist speeding at more than 60 kilometres over the limit.
Senior Sergeant Warren Greene’s message is simple – speed excessively and you’ll be caught.
His stern caution comes after a P-plate driver was caught doing 133km/h on a 70km/h stretch of Gourlay Rd, shortly before 9.30pm on 12 April.
The 18-year-old driver had held a licence for less than a month and was travelling with a seven-year-old passenger when he was caught.
“It is an absolutely horrendous speed on a road that is just not designed for people to travel that fast,” Sen-Sgt Greene told Star last week.
He said for someone to be driving that fast on a road with pot holes and rough shoulders, and with a young girl in the back seat, was on the verge of stupidity.
The teenager’s licence was cancelled for 12 months and he was fined more than $400.
He was also fined for failing to signal and for driving a manual car while holding a licence only for an automatic vehicle.
In another alarming case, a Delahey P-plater’s licence was suspended for six months after he was caught driving at 146km/h in Truganina.
He was fined $487 and received nine demerit points for speeding along Hopkins Rd on 5 April, and for failing to display P-plates.
A Taylors Hill woman was also clocked doing more than 40km/h over the limit in a school zone.
The P-plater was clocked travelling at 80km/h in Middle Rockbank Rd, Caroline Springs, on 4 April.
Her licence was suspended for six months, and she was hit with six demerit points and a $377 fine.
She was also fined more than $500 for driving an unregistered motor vehicle.
The P-plater was driving the same unregistered vehicle two days later when she was pulled over by officers at a Booze Bus station, and was fined $524.
Sen-Sgt Greene said the cases warned speeding motorists there is a greater chance of being caught with the new Caroline Springs police station operating.
He urged people to heed the advice or lose their licence – or even their life.
“We’re targeting all major roads and side roads in the area and we want people to slow down,” Snr-Sgt Greene said.
“It’s a really big concern that on these country-type roads drivers are pushing their speed well beyond what the roads are designed for.”
