WERRIBEE’S answer to Federation Square will feature a $65,000 Koori artwork.
The 16-metre-square park will be built behind the Wyndham Cultural Centre, and is expected to improve the vibrancy of Synnot St.
“Welcome to my Country”, a design by Wurrundjeri artist Mandy Nicholson, was selected as the square’s centrepiece.
It will be sand blasted into bluestone paving and cost $65,050.
Cash will come from a state government grant of $40,050 for Commonwealth Games projects, with the remaining $25,000 from the council’s public art budget.
The design features gum leaves representing the five Kulin nations.
The square was originally scheduled to be completed in April 2006, but was now expected by June.
The public would be asked to help name the square to recognise Wyndham’s indigenous people and their culture.
