THERE’S nothing like a helping hand from a buddy.
That’s the philosophy of the cross-age tutoring elective at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College.
The program involves 24 Year 9 students helping Years 3 and 4 students from Bellbridge Primary School develop their numeracy skills.
Hoppers Crossing teacher Ian Grossman said the program benefited both sets of students.
“It has a positive impact on the students’ self-esteem and is rewarding for the students’ personal growth.”
The older students prepare their own lessons, monitor the progress of their proteges, and work out ways they can improve for the next lesson.
Bellbridge teacher Shaam Nundlall said teaching students one-on-one allowed the school to pinpoint areas that needed attention.
“The first session had a profound effect on our students and they enthusiastically await the next one.”
