OLD Westbourne has notched up its second win of the season with a win over Monash in the Victorian Amateur Football Association at the weekend.
In the first senior home game played at the club’s new facilities, the Warriors looked comfortable from the first bounce, with Stuart Balloch kicking two first quarter goals and the ball rarely seen past the Warriors’ half-back line.
The second quarter saw both teams playing end-to-end football, with the Warriors only managing two goals to Monash’s one.
Winger Brad Merryweather was stretchered off the ground with a suspected broken leg, and centre-half forward Chris Hudson was also taken to hospital with a broken nose.
With only two players on the bench after half time, coach Fab Gatti knew the Warriors needed quick goals.
Justin Horsburgh responded with two goals for the quarter as Westbourne piled on six goals to extend the lead to 55 points at three-quarter time.
Old Westbourne continued to dominate play in the final quarter, with Andrew Horsburgh kicking two goals, finishing the game 73-point victors.
The reserves suffered a disappointing loss after being pounced on in the first half.
The Gryphons started the match in great fashion, booting six goals in the opening term, including three goals in the first five minutes.
The Warriors were startled, and allowed Monash to kick another four goals in the second quarter to open up an insurmountable 53-point lead at half time.
The underage warriors travelled to North Old Boys and suffered a 56-point loss.
