RUNNERS from Werribee Little Athletics Centre enjoyed an outstanding day of results at the Victorian Schools Cross Country Championships earlier this month.
Competing against some of the best young cross country athletes from around the state, Werribee’s Georgia Muller and Mia White qualified for the Australian Championships after coming second and third respectively in the Girls’ under 10 event.
Stuart Macaulay, who coaches Muller, said it was an outstanding effort from both girls.
“They know each other quite well after running against one another in Little Athletics competitions,” he said.
“They knew that if one of them gave an inch, the other one would zoom past.”
The National Championships will take place in Launceston next month.
With the top five runners from each state attending, Macaulay said the competition would be fierce.
“For me as a coach, I don’t talk to them about times because each course is different,” he said.
“Some are extremely easy and some are extremely hard. I just talk to them about being confident that they are one of those best 30 kids in the country and to enjoy the experience and go from there.
“At that age group, it is all an experience. You don’t know who you will be competing against because everyone is there for the first time.
“They have already done the hard work and now it is time to enjoy wearing a state uniform.”
The good news didn’t stop there for Werribee with Sophie McMinimee selected as an emergency for the Victorian team after coming sixth in the Girls’ under-12 event.
