THERE will be a spike in pirates this week at MacKillop College as the school prepares to launch The Pirates of Penzance theatrical show.
The show, which has been on and off Broadway and on film and television, will now be performed in the heart of Werribee.
A cast of 50 students from Years 7 to 12 will perform on stage alongside some juniors from MacKillop’s feeder schools.
Director of the musical Ed Dolista said audiences could expect to see lots of pirates.
“We have had lots of fun dressing up as pirates, there are lots of sword fighting and lots of ‘arghs’,” Mr Dolista said.
“We are really happy to bring it to MacKillop, it’s the first time the show has been done here,” he said.
“It’s a really fun experience for everyone.”
Auditions for the roles commenced in February, and the selected cast have been rehearsing twice a week after school since.
“It’s a big commitment for the actors and production team alike,” Mr Dolista said
“They are giving up a lot of time and they do so graciously, it’s certainly a worthwhile experience at the end.”
Mr Dolista said the show was a triple threat full of acting, dancing and singing.
“It’s full of classic tunes and colourful characters, a good way to spend two hours,” he said.
The show opens on Thursday 1 August and will run through to Saturday 3 August including a matinée show that day.
