STUDENTS from one of Wyndham’s newest schools have proved they have a passion for learning by hopping into action and they are now reaping the benefits.
In 2010, a group of students from Our Lady of the Southern Cross Primary School in Wyndham Vale was so interested in frogs that their teachers encouraged their curiosity by organising field trips and research projects.
The obsession with frogs continued to grow to the point that a tadpole aquarium was built at the school.
Last year, the students decided the frogs needed a natural habitat to live in and as a team they set about designing the Frog Bog.
Expert advice and quotes were sought, and the parents and friends group came on board to raise funds and successfully apply for more than $7000 in grants.
“The students measured and marked out the area and kept a close eye on proceedings, talking to the workmen and taking photos every step of the way,” deputy principal Sandy Henderson said.
“The pride and excitement felt by all on the day the frogs were released into their new home was priceless.
“The project was a great community effort that proved when people work together dreams can become reality.”
Now that the frog pond is finished, the students are enjoying waiting for the tadpoles to become frogs so they can witness the whole life cycle.
