Hidden talent in Port

Frederik in his studio.

Many residents in the Light House Beach area of Port Macquarie who enjoy walking in their neighbourhood would know of Frederik Glazenburg.
Every morning up until lunch time, the Port Macquarie artist sits painting in his studio attached to his house on the corner of Roma Terrace.  With the studio open to the street, letting in both light and air, many people walking past are accustomed to seeing him painting his canvases and stop and have a chat, including even the postman.
For all those interested in seeing his completed artworks, Frederik will be holding an exhibition of his paintings from the past 25 years’ work at the Port Macquarie Golf Club on Sunday, November 11, from 9am-5pm.
The Golf Club, which has recently been refurbished, holds fond memories for Frederick and his wife, Johanna, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary there last year with family and friends.
Originally from the Netherlands, Frederik was born in the town of Delft, which is renowned for its famous painters such as Vermeer. His passion for expressing himself through painting came over 25 years ago, and is one which he enjoys every day.
Having originally experimented with oil-based paints, a serendipitous meeting with a fellow artist from The Hague inspired Fred to commence painting with acrylic paint, which offers more opportunity for diversity. His artworks are very contemporary in nature and are inspired by the vivid colours of the Australian landscape.  He paints a wide variety of artworks from portraits, to landscapes, to abstract works.
When he commences a new artwork, it is a very organic process — he lets his paintbrush touch the canvas and then sees where the journey takes him. One artwork can take up to two months to complete and he is usually working on two or three paintings at any one time.  Fred’s paintings are hanging on walls all across the world, from Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Paris, New Zealand and many homes across Australia.
Frederik and Johanna first came to Australia 23 years ago, following their three children who had moved here independently several years prior.
After living in Sydney for several years, the couple fell in love with Port Macquarie and decided to make it their home.  As avid swimmers, they particularly love living by the sea, the natural landscapes and numerous open beaches and importantly, the town community feel.
Entrance to the art exhibition is free, with the artworks available to purchase. The artist, Frederik Glazenburg, will be present all day to answer any questions; and refreshments will be served.
