Exhibition a wartime historical landmine

The Port Macquarie Historical Society opened its new temporary exhibition ‘World War 2 at Home’ last Friday.
The exhibition tells the story of life in the Hastings during World War 2 and the local people and organisations that contributed to the war effort.
It also features many wartime objects and images from the PMHS collection. Special guest at the opening was Noel Day (nee Anderson) a former member of the Port Macquarie VAD and Australian Army Medical Women’s Service.
Noel’s daughter Lesley Godson read out some words that Noel had written about her wartime service including losing the purse she was given by the Port Macquarie VAD during celebrations when peace in the Pacific was declared.
The exhibition has been supported by grants from the Commonwealth Government’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs and Museums and Galleries NSW.
It is being held in conjunction with a travelling exhibition ‘There’s a War On! World War 2 at Home’ currently showing at Port Macquarie Library.
World War II at Home is on display at the Port Macquarie Historical Museum at 22 Clarence Street, Port Macquarie until January 31, 2012.
