When push comes to shove, locals up for the challenge

It’s all about toughing it out for locals Laura Philp and Adam Philp.
In less than a week, local duo Laura Philp (age 31) and Adam Philp (age 34) from Port Macquarie will push their minds and bodies to the limit competing in an extreme adrenaline-pumping sprint race.
The Kathmandu Adventure Series race will take place from February 4-5 in Lake Macquarie, NSW, to kick off the 2012 Series.
Designed to be fast and furious, competitors will brave 40km of kayaking, mountain biking, running and orienteering in all weather conditions across steep terrain and bushland.
Billed to be the most adrenaline-pumping adventure race in the Southern Hemisphere, hundreds of adventure seekers will head to compete in the Kathmandu Adventure Series 2012.
Two-person teams will face varying legs of kayaking, mountain biking, running, coasteering and orienteering, as they navigate a secret cross-country course covering roughly 40km across Cams Wharf – a stunning location on the shores of Lake Macquarie.
A test of both mental and physical strength, strategy will play a big part with challengers needing to plan the fastest and most efficient route as they map-read on the fly to locate hidden checkpoints.
Teams can expect to complete the course in two to six hours dependent upon their performance.
For those seeking the ultimate challenge, the 12-Hour and 24-Hour versions of the Kathmandu Adventure Series will take place in September covering a greater stretch of land and water.
An arduous feat, challengers can opt to race solo or as a team of two.
Located in some of the most eye-catching national parks and regions across Australia, the Kathmandu Adventure Series boast stunning courses for first time racers and veterans of the sport, including beautiful sand beaches, shingled bays, native coastal forest, bush-land, mountains, cliff-tops and even caves.
This is the eighth consecutive year the Kathmandu Adventure Series has taken place in Australia – a series that plays host to over 3500 adventure-hungry competitors every year.
Eight events are planned for Australia during 2012 and a further three will take place across New Zealand. In the series’ eight-year history over 15,000 racers have participated.
