A FAST-TRACKED development is providing a much-needed jobs boost for the region.
The development of an employment lands corridor at South Kempsey is being supported by the O’Farrell-Stoner Government.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Services Andrew Stoner last week announced state funding for essential water infrastructure at the site to support new developments, including proposed highway service centres expected to create hundreds of jobs, and the Slim Dusty Centre.
The State Government has committed $800,000 towards the $1.8 million infrastructure project.
Mr Stoner said the support provided through the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government’s Regional Industries Investment Fund (RIIF) would help mitigate the local economic impacts of the new 14.5km bypass south of the town.
“The funding is a significant contribution towards installing water infrastructure on lands adjacent to the new Kempsey bypass that are earmarked for a new services and employment corridor,” Mr Stoner said.
“The O’Farrell-Stoner Government has been unwavering in its commitment to fix the Pacific Highway and is mindful of the impacts that upgrading the state’s principal north-south highway will have on business and communities along its route.
“That is why we have been working closely with Kempsey Shire Council and local landholders to fast-track work on this new development, which will ultimately generate economic activity and jobs for the area.”
Kempsey Shire Mayor Liz Campbell said the commercial and industrial corridor would form the southern gateway to Kempsey and provide much-needed jobs.
“The provision of this critical infrastructure will be a major enabling factor for commercial and industrial development and growth along the employment lands corridor,” Cr Campbell said.
“Funding to start infrastructure works is an important first step in the revitalisation of the retail economy of Kempsey and to provide fresh opportunities for innovative business and job creation industries along the corridor.”
Mr Stoner said it is a win-win situation for Kempsey residents and travellers on the main Pacific Highway route.
“While travellers now have the benefit of a safe carriageway that will cut time off their trip and local residents enjoy reduced traffic through the town centre, the local community will also benefit from the employment lands corridor that will create jobs,” Mr Stoner said.
”The Regional industries Investment Fund assists projects that support the creation of new or retention of existing jobs, and those that help build local business capacity and create local industry opportunities.”
