WHEN you’re studying, every dollar counts.
Regional students often face challenges that their metropolitan counterparts avoid.
Juggling the costs associated with travel and accommodation, as well as the usual expense of course fees, can create an extra financial burden for students and their families while they look to further their education.
Dunbogan resident Wiphaphorn “Pa” Jiaoram is one such student.
Pa is an inspiring 19-year-old who has a passion for helping others.
She knew from an early age that she wanted a career that would see her working with all kinds of people.
She was interested in midwifery, but couldn’t secure any work experience placements so she decided to try out aged care.
“I wanted to work as a midwife as I love the pure innocence of babies, though when this wasn’t available to me, I chose aged care as a pathway to midwifery,” Pa said.
“I discovered I really enjoyed working with older people, so my career choice changed direction.”
Pa is now in her first year of a Bachelor of Nursing with University of Newcastle at the Port Macquarie TAFE Campus.
She chose to study with the University of Newcastle as it was the only university that was offering the course close to home and allowed her to continue working at Bundaleer Nursing Home.
Pa said she knew that university study would be expensive, so she looked into scholarship opportunities.
She mentioned to a friend that she was not having much luck when the friend told her about the Hastings Education Fund. When Pa heard about the local fund she applied immediately.
“It all happened very quickly. I used the grant to purchase a new laptop, printer, desk and chair,” Pa said.
“This was a great help to me considering textbooks for one term cost around $400. I’m so thankful to the people who’ve made the grant possible – I want to give them all a big hug.”
Without the financial burden of purchasing new equipment, Pa said she could focus on her studies.
