Port Macquarie teen James Magnussen has made history with his world championship swims in China.
Magnussen has cleaned up at the event, bringing home two golds in both the 4x100m relay and the 100m freestyle and a silver in the men’s 4x100m medley relay, alongside swimming legends Brenton Rickard, Geoff Huegill and Hayden Stoeckel.
Magnussen has attracted worldwide attention with his wins, but back home, friends, family and residents could not be more proud.
Independent MP for Lyne Robert Oakeshott congratulated the new king of the pool.
“The local community is thrilled for James and his family, and we are very proud of his efforts,” Mr Oakeshott said.
“Many of us remember a tall, scrawny kid lapping us all in the local pool, and what we have seen in the past week is an athlete who has obviously stepped up his workload to now achieve the word-class standard he is setting.
“There were many in the local swimming club and surf clubs who knew James Magnussen was a special talent. Taking that to a world-class level takes a lot of work, and we all salute James Magnussen for turning that talent into an inspirational result for Australian swimming.
“Over the coming years, Port Macquarie is in for a very exciting time as we celebrate the emerging James Magnussen era in world swimming. We wish him well and we’re all behind him,” Mr Oakeshott said.
