Warning: lock up valuables

Residents and visitors alike can take steps to secure their valuables and belongings this holiday season.
While Port Macquarie-Hastings region has a relatively low crime rate and low thefts compared with the state’s average, Council’s Crime Prevention Officer Christine Bannister said residents set to travel this Christmas should take the time to lock away any precious or costly items in the home.
“Not all crime is planned, in fact a significant proportion of crime is spur of the moment and opportunistic,” Ms Bannister said.
“You can reduce your chance of losing items by ensuring they are put away securely.”
People are being reminded to lock the doors and windows of their homes, and if travelling, cancel newspaper deliveries, have a neighbour collect mail, put the garbage out and keep an eye on your home.
And it’s not only residents that can take action these holidays to protect their belongings.
“If you are shopping or at the beach, keep valuables in your car out of sight and make sure the doors and boot are locked,” Mrs Bannister said.
