Port Macquarie Probus Club has turned 30 in style. Members gathered to mark the occasion with a celebration dinner recently.
In 1981, the first Probus Club was initiated in Area 9650, the Port Macquarie Probus Club. The first President was Bill de la Rue. Area 9650 extends from Forster to Woolgoolga on the coast and to Lightning Ridge inland.
In July 1988, the club became incorporated.
In 1987, the Masonic Centre became the meeting place until April 2000 and, to the present time, the club meets at the Port City Bowling Club on the first Wednesday of each month.
The club became a Mixed Gender Club in February 2008, and the first three women, Doreen Clark, Margaret Lennon and Norma Sutton were elected to the committee in 2008/2009.
In 2009/2010, the first female president, Norma Sutton, was elected.
Today the Club has one Foundation Member, John McClelland, two Life Members, Don Cameron and Col Pryor, and one Honorary Member, Jeff Ramm; they all regularly attend meetings.
