Region ripped apart by rains

A significant landslide and flood damage have forced Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to close Comboyne Road to traffic.

The decision was made following an engineering inspection of the site on Monday, which assessed the amount of water still coming down the mountainside, the degree of movement of the roadway and the potential for significant further damage.

The closure is around 17.5 kilometres from the Oxley Highway between Byabarra and Comboyne.

Until further geo-technical inspections are carried out, it is unknown exactly how long the road will be closed.

Mayor Peter Besseling acknowledges that, while the road closure has the potential for disruption for many residents in the area, it is a matter of public safety.

“The rainfall over the last two weeks has resulted in a number of landslides on Comboyne mountain in the last 10 days.
