In 1994 Donna Carson was doused in petrol and set alight by her then partner.
Now, after five and a half months in hospital, 15 months in rehabilitation, 19 operations and more than a decade as an advocate for victims of crime, Donna is bringing her story to Port Macquarie to help raise funds for the Hastings Women and Children’s Refuge.
As the guest speaker at the Hastings Heroines – International Women’s Day event at the Glasshouse on March 8, Donna will share her experience as a survivor of domestic violence to help raise awareness of the importance of the Refuge and the services it provides for local women.
Kelly Lamb, President of the Hastings Business Women’s Network, who is presenting the event with local MP Leslie Williams, said, “We are very grateful that Donna has agreed to share her harrowing yet inspirational story to help raise funds for the much-needed refurbishment of the Refuge.
“Donna is an ideal speaker for our event which will pay tribute to a number of Hastings Heroines – unsung local ladies who have made a lasting impression on our community – because she is a true heroine herself.”
Donna Carson was named Australian of the Year Local Hero in 2004 and has dedicated much time to advocating on behalf of victims of crime, burns survivors and survivors of domestic violence.
Donna urged anyone in a crisis, regardless of gender or age, to seek information, support and assistance.
“To ask for help is not a sign of weakness or shame, but rather, a show of great courage and wisdom. We all deserve to be safe, respected and encouraged to become the people we are meant to be,” Donna said.
