A new system in the Port Macquarie’s CBD is set to revolutionise parking management.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is preparing to commence the installation of sensor technology, trialled with what it describes as“great success” on Horton and Hay Streets, Port Macquarie.
The concept will now be permanently installed throughout the main town centre.
Council’s Director of Development and Environment, Matt Rogers acknowledged the importance in ensuring a constant turnover of parking spaces in time restricted parking areas and said the new system would assist in providing cars with a share of available spaces.
“The availability of parking in the Port Macquarie CBD was becoming an increasingly important issue in the community,” Mr Rogers said.
“Throughout the trial period and as part of the development of the Parking Strategy in 2011, there was community and business support for the use of this type of technology to assist in improving accessibility within the CBD.”
Installation began on Monday after business hours to minimise disruption.
Council’s Team Leader, Ranger Services Ian Chetcuti said each device is programmed with relevant data for the bay, including the time limit, operating hours, location and time, relaying accurate records to Rangers via a hand-held device when a car has overstayed. Highly visible signage at all locations will advise the new system is in use.
“The vehicle overstay detection systems will reduce the need for officers to mark tyres and monitor parking times manually,” Mr Chetcuti said. “Council Rangers perform an important community service. Local businesses rely on them to enforce parking restrictions in retail areas to ensure there is a regular turnover of vehicles.”
A two week long grace period will be put in place during which time data will be collected using the technology to enable more informed planning for parking management in the Local Government Area for the future.
No changes are being made to the parking conditions in the nominated areas.
