Four of Port Macquarie’s Holcroft family members have been dubbed heroes after being involved in a sea rescue at Shelly Beach last Saturday week (full story in last week’s Independent www.portmacquarieindependent.com.au).
Paul, Gary, Paul and Tane were at the north end of the beach about 4pm when they played an integral role in the rescue of a husband and wife in distress whilst swimming in rough seas.
The wife was dragged to safety but, although pulled ashore by the Holcrofts, Christof Huber, 53, died on site.
Both Pauls and Gary entered the surf to bring in the swimmers, whilst Tane took over emergency aid on shore before authorities arrived.
But Tane said they were not the only ones who helped the swimmers. “Yes we all helped but there were others who need to be thanked too,” she said. “There was a guy with star tatoos on his arm that helped drag in the woman.
“He also did chest compressions on the man whilst his wife did mouth to mouth.
“Another man with a grey stubbly beard took over doing mouth to mouth until the ambulance arrived.
“That man’s wife also helped.
“And there was a woman in a green sarong who rang the emergency services too.
“I wish we got their names so we could thank them, but hopefully you’ll read this and know how much we care.”
