Trek of a lifetime for James

Westport high School student James White is about to embark on the journey of a lifetime.
James will be taking part in the 2011 Sandakan Mateship Trek with 11 other young people and MPs Jason Clare, Scott Morrison and Independent MP for Lyne Rob Oakeshott.
Together, the group will retrace the footsteps of Australian prisoners of war who were marched more than 200km from Sandakan to Ranau in 1945. Only six Australians survived.
Only six Australians escaped, with more than 15 men including Mr Oakeshott’s grandfather, Captain John Oakeshott, being murdered two weeks after Victory in the Pacific.
The four students representing the Mid-North Coast are St Clare’s High School student Liam Carney, from Wingham, GenerationOne sponsored Tommaya Kelly-Sines from St Paul’s College Kempsey, James White from Westport High School in Port Macquarie, and Kyia Eveleigh from Gloucester High School.
“All four are of local aboriginal descent, covering the Dunghutti, Biripai, and Worimi lands,” Mr Oakeshott said.
