$250,000 will give life to a project aimed at restoring bushland on Yarranabee and Wrights Creeks.
The grant is part of an $8 million NSW Government program to fix degraded natural bushland sites.
Port Macquarie Landcare Group President, Estelle Gough said, “We have been dreaming of this kind of funding for four years and to now finally have it is amazing.
“It will allow us to do so much more work to improve our native vegetation and make our dream come true,” Mrs Gough said.
“The Port Macquarie project is among 33 across the State to share in $8 million under the Community Bush Regeneration Large Project grants, part of the Environmental Restoration and Rehabilitation program.
“Administered by the NSW Environmental Trust, these grants deliver on the NSW Government’s commitment to regenerate degraded natural bushland including riverbanks, waterways and urban bushland.
Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said, in a challenging economic environ-ment, this funding targets key community groups who are best placed to protect their local environment.
“I am pleased to announce that Port Macquarie Landcare Group Inc has been successful in securing $250,000 for a project to restore 56 hectares of significant remnant forest corridors,” Mrs Williams said.
The project will control weeds from the top of the catchments of Yarranabee and Wrights Creeks and will involve land carers leading community groups and neighbours.
This is set to benefit bio-diversity across three state and/or nationally threatened ecological communities.
“The grants are aimed at larger scale, longer term projects which will build capacity for the local community.
