Funding a walk in the park

The Friends of Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park has received $25,000 for the upgrade of walking trails in the park.
This is the second consecutive year that the group has received funding from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation.
Friends of Kooloonbung president, Dave Comish said, “The Friends’ group are very grateful for this substantial amount of community money that will be used to seal some of the often muddy and impassable sections of pathway along Hollingsworth St (behind the Port Macquarie scout halls).”
The existing earth trail will be widened and levelled by Friends of Kooloonbung volunteers and local contractors.
Timber bridges and potential erosion areas such as stormwater drains and natural gullies will also be addressed at this time.
Another local contractor has been engaged to seal the path with an asphalt surface. This long-term solution will allow the track to be usable in all weather.
It will also help to preserve natural vegetation and the water quality in Kooloonbung Creek.
At the completion of the machine-operated  works, the Friends will be planting 250 trees to help stabilise soil in the gullies, reducing erosion and the consequential effect on Kooloonbung Creek.
Work has commenced on the site, so pedestrian detours may be in place for the duration of the track work.
