A local craft group has capped off yet another exciting year.
Mid last year the ladies’ crafters of Garden Village decided to make some beanies and send them over to our soldiers in Afghanistan.
Some of the ladies in the group are ex-servicewomen, but most just remember how even little things like knitted beanies can be welcome when you are a long way from home in an inhospitable country.
Garden Village spokeswoman Kate Chew said “they went and made a whole batch of beanies with a little note pinned to them “made with love for our boys from the Garden Village Craft Group”.
“In November the coordinator of the group, Beryl Ward, received a lovely thank you letter from a commanding officer of Special Operations Task Group, part of a multi-national base Tarin Kowt in Afghanistan.
“He said the boys really appreciated the beanies to wear under their helmets to keep them warm in the cold of the snow capped mountains.
“Our soldiers really feel that they are not going unnoticed while they do their very important job overseas.
But the story doesn’t stop there, Ms Chew said.
“Just last week I received an email from a recently retired colleague of Garden Village, who mentioned that her son-in-law, who happens to be a soldier in the Special Operations Task Force posted in Afghanistan, received a beanie from the Garden Village Craft Group and included a great photo of him wearing his warm beanie in a snow clad place with the mountains around him,”
she said.
“I know they are not the only group of ladies making these skull caps, but it’s that old Aussie spirit coming out.”
