Mayor slams AEC office loss

THE Mayor of Armidale Dumaresq Council, Dr Jim Maher, has expressed disappointment at news Armidale is to lose the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) Office, which is being relocated to Coffs Harbour.
Three permanent staff will be transferred from Armidale. At election time in the past, students and other residents of Armidale also gained casual work with the AEC.
Dr Maher said it was an important office for Armidale.
“The AEC has contributed to the civic education of our region and this is therefore a blow to our student and teachers in the area,” Dr Maher said.
“Our community deserves better treatment than this!”
Dr Maher called on candidates for the seat of the New England to also express their support for the retention of the AEC office in Armidale.
