A gift for science

ELISABETH Kallmier’s future is one step closer to being in a laboratory among the bunsen burners and beakers.
Elisabeth, a St Columbia Anglican School student from Lake Cathie, was selected to attend the University of Sydney’s Science Gifted and Talented Discovery Program on 10-12 July.
Elisabeth joined 107 talented science students in Year 9 and 10 from around New South Wales, Canberra and Victoria to complete fun hands-on workshops and lectures in biology, chemistry and physics.
The program’s entrance exam was sat by 1731 students from 93 schools, with only the top 9.4 per cent of students invited to the workshop.
School programs co-ordinator, Faculty of Science Jess Morris said the students were given the chance to discover all the different areas of science.
“As well as challenging talented science students with the activities, the program gives students an insight into studying science at university and as a possible career. They get to meet scientists who work at the university and find out about cutting edge research,” Ms Morris said.
“They also meet and become friends with other students who are interested in science, so it’s a great social experience as well.”
The University of Sydney’s Science Gifted and Talented Discovery Program has been running since 1996 and has had over 1600 students participate since its inception.
The program runs twice a year for three days each in the July and October school holiday period.
