With Anzac Day set to be commemorated next Wednesday an eight page booklet has been launched highlighting the war efforts of six former local residents.
“The Spirit of ANZAC’ is designed to provide an insight into Australia’s military history and particularly the heroic contributions of the brave men and women from the Port Macquarie electorate.
Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams launched the book saying,“I commissioned the booklet which has been sent to every household in the electorate as a way we can all share in the local history of Anzac.
“It is important to learn about our history and the Gallipoli campaign was a defining moment in this country’s development as a nation.
“Anzac Day is the day we all stop and salute our diggers and pay our respects for those who have served our country so well in the past as well as those men and women who are currently deployed overseas in countries such as Afghanistan.
“Just last weekend I met a mother at Laurieton whose son is currently serving overseas and like all mothers in a similar situation, she looks forward to the day he returns home safely. I am sure that is a wish shared by all Australians.
“I am particularly pleased that our local RSL Sub branches in Port Macquarie and Laurieton have embraced “The Spirit of ANZAC’ booklet,” Mrs Williams said.
Port Macquarie RSL Sub Branch President, Greg Laird praised the booklet saying it is a great way to pay respect to our fallen diggers as well as providing people with details of local Anzac Day marches and services.
“I congratulate Leslie Williams for honouring Australia’s military history and remembering those who answered the call to defend our great nation,” Mr Laird said.
“While Anzac Day commemorates the landing at Gallipoli in 1915, it is also a day to reflect and thank those who served in all conflicts so that we enjoy the freedom we have today.
“Judging by the growing number of young people attending Anzac Day services, I feel the spirit of Anzac will live on for generations to come,” Mrs Williams said.
