Care has been returned to the members of the Inner Wheel Club of Port Macquarie West who received a grant recently to help its project of creating care packages for premature babies.
The monies came from the Holiday Coast Credit Union 2012 Community Partnerships Program.
The project is organised by the ladies’ craft group within the Inner Wheel Club for the Special Care Nursery at Port Macquarie Base Hospital.
This project has now been running for over two years and this grant has enabled the continuation of this project.
The main purpose of the project is to provide support to mothers of premature babies.
With the unexpected early arrival of a premature baby, the family is quite often not ready with all the necessary items for such a small baby.
A baby pack containing a blanket, bonnet, booties, singlet, socks, very small suit and a teddy bear is presented to mothers of premature babies, difficult/lonely deliveries or with medical problems, who find themselves in hospital before the expected time with a very small baby.
The craft group, led by Carol Cosgriff for the past 18 months, has worked closely with the nurse-in-charge of the Special Care Nursery to provide exactly what is needed for these tiny babies who, along with their parents, are going through a very difficult time.
The nurses have special requests sometimes, such as little vests to allow for various tubes that are necessary for these special little babies, specially designed peanut pillows for head moulding and knitted vests for temperature control.
Parents of premature babies have a very stressful time initially and the ladies of the craft group of the Inner Wheel Club hope to make their lives a little less stressful by helping them, through this project.
