ARCHIVES play a big role in history research and they will be the focus of the first of three talks hosted by the Port Macquarie Historical Society during winter.
On Tuesday at 10.30am, archivist Clive Smith will talk about the importance of archives and how archives reveal much about our lives, our history and our heritage.
Mr Smith has worked with large archive repositories across Australia and overseas and recently completed an archives management plan for the Port Macquarie Historical Society, funded through a Royal Australian Historical Society grant.
Archives of local community groups and businesses can tell us much about our cultural heritage and Mr Smith will explain why those boxes of archives in our spare rooms and garages might be very important.
“Community group secretaries, committee members and business owners may find Clive’s talk particularly helpful,” Port Macquarie Historical Society president Debbie Sommers said.
“What records to keep and where to keep them can be a challenging issue for many community groups and small businesses.
“Archives can give us great insight into the past and are important resources in recording and documenting our local history, in fact without them we may not exist.”
Next Tuesday’s talk is a free event at the Port Macquarie Historical Museum on 22 Clarence Street.
Other talks in the series are The Heritage Scoreboard – Winners and Losers on Tuesday 9 July and Dead but not Buried – Caring for Family Treasures on Tuesday 6 August.
